1 Kingdom Plantae thousand species Huge diversity

2 What do we know already?

3 Five characteristics of plants?
1.) Lack mobility 2.) Eukaryotic 3.) Numerous cell organelles 4.) Cellulose cell walls 5.) Photosynthesis

4 Evolution • Diversity within a population promotes long-term survival
– Organisms that can adapt to new surroundings and changes in the environment will survive. Earth first colonized by fungi & plants that came from the water – The move to drier conditions necessitated the evolution of structures and tissues for support outside of the water

5 Division of angiosperms
Monocots Have 1 seed leaf Parallel veins on leaves 3 part symmetry of flowers Fibrous roots Ex: lilies, onions, corn, grass, wheat Dicots • have 2 seed leaves • Network of veins on leaves • 4-5 part symmetry of flowers • Taproots • Ex: maple trees, peas, cabbage, cacti

8 General Structures Roots Absorb water and minerals Anchor the plant to
the substrate (ground) Stems Support plant Transport water through the xylem Transport nutrients through the phloem

9 Leaves Photosynthetic organs of the plant Have stomata: pores within the leaf that open to let CO2 in and O2 out Cuticle: waxy covering on leaves that prevents water loss

10 Flowers Reproductive organs of the plant Flowers are usually both male and female Male part: “stamen” Female part: “pistil” “Stigma” “Ovary”

11 Reproduction Pollen is produced by the stamen
Pollen moves away from the plant via the wind or other pollinators (birds, insects) The pollen lands on the pistil of another plant and fertilizes the eggs within the ovary The flower petals fall off, the ovary becomes a fruit with seeds inside Fruits are dispersed in a variety of ways (wind, animals, people) Fruits are not always edible! (e.g. dandelion fluff)

14 Pick an angiosperm that you know
Draw and label the lifecycle of angiosperm in steps. Make a comic or story out of it. Some key words to use – Germinate, monocot, dicot, cotyledon, radicle, coleoptile, seed coat, embryo, endosperm, root, stamen, pistil, stigma, ovary, pollinate, fruit, flower etc. Be creative and have fun.

15 Colourful, clean, neat / 2 Science vocabulary used / 5 Accurate description / 2 At least 8 (or more) steps/panes / 1 Total / 10
