Times table practice X X
Children learn lots of methods and techniques in year 5 mathematics to solve many different problems. In the past, we have found children who are weak in their times table knowledge flounder when concepts become more challenging. Children in Year 5 need to be able to recall all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. With this knowledge, the children can then make links to other mathematical concepts, such as: fractions, decimals and percentages. Pupils are encouraged to practise and recall their tables on a regular basis to ensure they are firmly embedded. Use a car journey to practise quick mental recall – and make it fun! CC

Marking and Assessment
As part of the Curriculum, pupils will be assessed by Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) rather than levels. KPI’s are the key learning objectives from the National Curriculum. These are divided into Reading, Writing and Maths and then various categories within these three headings. They are then divided into terms and children will be assessed as either Below (B), Working Towards (WT), Working At (WA) or Greater Depth (GD) . This information will then be entered onto our tracking database after teacher assessment each half term. A mixture of formative and summative assessments and moderation of writing will take place throughout the year to support teachers’ judgements. CC

School visits/workshops
During the course of the year, Y5 will have the opportunity to participate in several visits/workshops, such as: Metal workshop (Autumn Term) Greek Day (Spring Term) Sustainability (Summer Term) at the Environmental Centre CC
