Making Choice All I have learnt of any value has been self-taught.
6
Outlines Types of Research Research Advisor Research support
Research Problem Research Tools Thesis & Dissertation Committee Members
7
Types of Research Basic Research Applied Research
Fundamental properties Dedicate to Narrow Purposes From 0 to 100 Isolation Usefulness Immediate Benefit to Society Based on Others Study, Equipment More Out-going
8
Research Advisor In independent nature of graduate education, woman or minority student is vulnerable group. Wisely choose an advisor meets our needs. Types of advisor: type Traits Advantage Disadvantages Collaborator Young Side by side Bias Hands-off Mid-level More tolerance High risk problem Senior scientist Well-established Follow the lead Obsolete
9
Research Advisor Evaluate the advisor: Good advisors traits:
Published in high quality journals. Citation times. Invited presentation, consultant. Former graduate students. Environment of laboratory. Good advisors traits: Respect for individuality Enthusiasm and personal support Patience and recognition
10
Research Advisor The choice of and advisor should be based on the advisor’s: Accomplishments in teaching and research Enthusiasm for advising students Experience in directing graduate students Management and organization of his research group Reputation for setting high standards in a congenial atmosphere Compatible personality
11
Research Support Financial support: Study program:
Teaching assistantship: 20+ hrs./wk. teaching. Research assistantship: research to specific project. Research fellowship: just get paid. (ideal) Study program: A flexible but provide core knowledge needed for performance as a researcher. Bad program may cause dilemma between the program and research. The permutation of the program’s course should meet the demand of discipline and advisor.
12
Research Problem Points to consider when choosing a research problem:
Can it be enthusiastically pursed? Can interest be sustained by it? Is the problem solvable? Is it worth doing? Will it lead to other research problem? Is it manageable in size? What is its potential for making original contributions to the literature? If the problem is solved, will the results be reviewed well by scholars in your field? Are you, or will you become, competent to solve it? By solving it, will you have demonstrated independent skills in your discipline? Will the necessary research prepare you in an area of demand or promise for the future?
13
Research Problem Promising research area:
Information technology New material and their applications Industrial technology and office automation Biotechnology Health and medical technology Disciplinary or interdisciplinary research?
14
Research Problem A good research should meet one or more followings:
Uncovers new facts. Suggests new relationships. Challenges currently accepted truths and assumptions. Provides new insights into poorly understood phenomena.
15
Research Tools Take specific course in the campus.(e.g. computer science, statistics, technical writing) Foreign language is also important in nowadays.
16
Thesis & Dissertation Committee Members
M.S. degree needs three to four members. Faculty who are young academically are often most helpful. If research problem involved in allied field, then a faculty member from which field will be valuable.
