The only native parrot species in the US
Found from The Ohio River Valley to the gulf of Mexico – in old hardwood forests The last wild individual was hunted in Florida in 1904 The last captive individual died in 1918 in the Cincinnati zoo.

Reasons for Extinction
Habitat destruction: Forests were logged for timber and to create agricultural fields. Colorful feathers were in high demand by the fashion industry. The birds was desired as a pets. Their flocking behavior led to many being killed as they retuned to the downed birds. The last viable population was speculated to have contracted poultry disease.
