1 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
By Peter Summers Source for slide 4:

2 A still that shows an individual from a particular social group we have represented
The stills we got from our thriller both from the same scene, are of the flashback of our main character being bullied and victimized. The social group we have represented here are what are called ‘gangsters’ because there are three members of the gang who are all working together to give our main character a lower more vulnerable status. We represent ‘gangsters’ in our thriller by planning it out so the camera gets a great point of view shot of the whole situation, we can see there are three people standing in front of him, but we can hardly see their faces, making it much more tense and seem more like an imagery flashback. We also see them violently shoving the victim against the fence and shouting abuse at him which is a stereotypical think for gangsters to do. We also edited the brightness of these shots so again, the lighting as well as the costumes that our characters are wearing are dark which again, is a stereotypical thing for gangsters to do and makes it even more difficult to see their faces.

3 A still of a character from another film that discusses the social group
Fargo, a Crime, Drama and Thriller released in 1996 has the same sort of characters in that they represent the same social group, ‘Gangsters.’ In this still here, played by Frances McDormand who is the victim of a gangs prey and is also the target of another gang. These two stills, from the same scene, show Frances being victimized by what we can assume is the gang. We assume this by how again, like in our thriller opening, the gang members are being cruel towards him. Such as in the left still she has just seen the gang member and screams in fright and in the right still she has been caught so she can’t get to the phone to ring for help. The gang members in fargo are a lot more violent and extreme in these stills in comparison to our groups Thriller but both represent individuals from the social group ‘Gangsters’ very well.

4 A still of a real individual who also represents that social group
The description of the murder of the victim is described as ‘extraordinarily callous, violent and brutal’ Obviously in our Thriller, our gangsters don’t go as far as harming or murdering the main character but some of the things they say and maybe other moments that are not shown in the opening are brutal. The article also suggests that the gang members planned to slice off the victims fingers and pull out his teeth so the body could not be identified, and of course, so they would not be caught. Again, our gangsters aren’t as extreme as this but similarly, we have made it so that they are unable to be identified but their costumes being dark, filming the footage without showing their face and editing the brightness.
