Forest Management Knowledge gaps (continued next page)
“Science”…………Operations National level………stand level How “passively” managed stands accumulate C Which mgmt practices sequester more carbon—ex: regeneration. Questions about afforestation effects National database of practices/areas unknown, maybe
2
Forest Management Knowledge gaps Harvested wood carbon
System boundaries Plantations for energy Greater uncertainty in some pools Fire management, health, and emissions Maximum carbon accumulation in forests Landowner choices for management Ecosystem services

Synthesis efforts/Next steps (1 of 2)
Working Group using Meta-Analysis for synthesis Leads: Peter Curtis, with ML Smith, Coeli Hoover. General frame is “making recommendations for managing forests for C sequestration”. Working Group on “Recommended modifications to systematic nationwide remote sensing data and other spatial data (FIA) to help characterize the nature and extent of forest management at a national level” Leads: Jeff Masek, Randy Wynne, and Rich Birdsey Randy Wynne to invite remote sensing scientists to give presentations at the annual Society of American Foresters meeting.

Synthesis efforts/Next steps (2 of 2)
Working Group on “Best Management Practice” Develop a list of best management recommendations to maintain and enhance carbon sinks in major North American forest types Leads: Tom Kolb, Linda Heath, Paul Bolstad Meet with Human Dimensions/Social Sciences to ensure carbon as an ecosystem service is being covered (Heath to followup) Discussion forum, share list of participants (Heath to do)
