Revising plot You each have a breakdown of the whole play.
Useful revision: every time you revise R+J start by writing on a blank grid everything you know about each scene then pick a topic to revise e.g. Fate. Revising plot You each have a breakdown of the whole play. Using the grid write as much of the blank spaces from memory

How to revise? Make revision posters over and over again
If you are not revising on your weekends now you are setting yourself to fail girls. When this is all over you can watch Netflix, scroll through phones and do what you want in the summer knowing you did the best you could! The time is now. How to revise? Make revision posters over and over again -theme in the middle, main ideas, quotes Do practice questions- ask me for some Doing character revision- all the things you know from memory and then open Romeo and Juliet to add quotes

Romeo Is immature to think he can beat fate “defy you stars”
Romantic love with Juliet He uses religious language for her- shows he worships her At the ball “shrine” “my lips two blushing pilgrims” “angel” He uses light imagery for her “jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” “Juliet is the sun” – dangerous, light up his life, sun was worshipped before religion “banishment be merciful say death” Fickle love- he thinks he is in love with Rosaline -oxymorons “thou canst teach me to forget” Friar tells him his tears have not dried yet from Rosaline Too immature to know what love truly was. Masculine with Mercutio and Benvolio Act 2.4 Juxtapose with Mercutio’s attitude to love “quivering thigh” “bawdy hand” “medlar tree” Has a strong relationship with Friar

C/L Tuesday 15th January Revising Lady Capulet
No simple short ideas. This is GCSE and you have to fully explain and show off what you know! Revising Lady Capulet
5
Come up with your own word bank of words and phrases to describe her
Elizabethan mother Distant Follows rules Needs the nurse Submissive Controlling Cruel Wants wealth and status
6
Eager to see Juliet marry Paris because Paris is related to Prince Escalus so it will raise their social standing. Protects family honour – wants Romeo killed when he kills Tybalt She married young and wants Juliet to conform to this expectation Goes against Juliet to avoid Lord Capulet’s rage
7
Lady Capulet = typical UPPER CLASS Elizabethan mother
Lady Capulet symbolises the typical Elizabethan mother Controlled by the father Distant relationship SUPPORT AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE NOT LOVE Teach daughter to: marry and have children young
8
Key Quotes “enough Nurse I pray thee hold thy peace!”
“read o’er the volume of Paris’ face” “I beg for justice which thou must give” “do as thou wilt for I have done with thee” Act 3 Scene 5
9
“enough Nurse I pray thee hold thy peace!”
The Nurse is talking about a memory of Juliet when she fell forward onto her face when an earthquake happened. Lady Capulet silences her. It suggests she isn’t interested in hearing about Juliet as a child. Irritated tone – is she jealous of the nurse or just desperate to keep to the important topic of marrying Paris?
10
“read o’er the volume of Paris’ face”
Using a metaphor: read Paris’ face like a book. Her concern is appearance not love. Imperative phrase “read over” Eager to marry Paris to raise their social standing/wealth
11
“I beg for justice which thou must give” Romeo slew Tybalt, Romeo must not live”
She stands up for her family honour and reputation. Shocking she is giving commands to Prince Escalus. Repetition of imperative verb “must” highlights her rage and intense desire to get revenge for her family.
12
“do as thou wilt for I have done with thee””
I am done with you She supports her husband who called Juliet a “wretched baggage” She disowns Juliet. She is disgusted and ashamed with Juliet. As a wife, SHE CANNOT disagree with her husband. Perhaps she does want to support Juliet but Elizabethan society won’t let her!

What I’d do How does Shakespeare present Lady Capulet’s relationship with Juliet Introduction- Lady Capulet is a typical Elizabethan mother who Shakespeare uses to present the dangers of Elizabethan parenting as its cold distant nature is what drove Juliet away and has responsibility to play in her own death. Lady Capulet is weakened by the patriarchal husband who makes decision and prevents Lady Capulet from being a powerful mother. Shakespeare uses the relationship between Lady Capulet and Juliet to highlight how parental relationships can be weaker than romantic relationships and are not the main source of love, care and support for a child. He possibly wanted to show his audience that the Elizabethan society had pressurised upper class mothers to follow a duty of being cold and distant with children and to allow others to have more power. He likely wanted to change the expectation. 2 paragraphs on the extract – look at irony, look at how Nurse is more concerned, analyse regret, sadness and how different she was to earlier on. Rest of play – contrast with Nurse “I can tell her age unto an hour”- other relationships can be stronger Rest of play- contrast with Romeo’s love and worship for her “Juliet is the sun” “holy shrine” and he dies for her. Conclusion – Lady Capulet has a distant, weak relationship with Juliet. Shakespeare uses it to highlight strengths in other relationships to highlight the faults in the Elizabethan patriarchal society that pressurised mothers to be distant and cold. He may have wanted to reverse the expectations of an Elizabethan mother.
