2 Team A team is not a bunch of people with job titles, but a congregation of individuals, each of whom has a role which is understood by other members. Members of a team seek out certain roles and they perform most effectively in the ones that are most natural to them. - Dr. R. M. Belbin

3 Belbin Team Roles Belbin Team Roles are used to identify people's behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. This information can be used to: Build productive working relationships Select and develop high-performing teams Raise self-awareness and personal effectiveness Build mutual trust and understanding Aid recruitment processes

4 Team roles A “team role” is a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a certain way

5 Using the Belbin Role Model tool
The Belbin Team Roles Model can be used in several ways: to think about team balance before a project starts to highlight and so manage interpersonal differences within an existing team to develop yourself or others as a team player , just knowing about the Belbin Team Roles model can bring more harmony to your team, as team members learn that there are different approaches that are important in different circumstances and that no one approach is best all of the time.

6 PLANT(PL) Role Definition:The ideas person who finds new angles and approaches to problems. Positive Qualities:Genius, imagination, intellect, knowledge. Allowable Weakness:Up in the clouds, inclined to disregard practical details or protocol

7 RESOURCE INVESTIGATOR(RI)
Role Definition:The Mr./Mrs. Fix-it who has contacts and runs the relevant and irrelevant networks. Positive Qualities:A capacity for contacting people and exploring anything new. An ability to respond to challenge. Allowable Weakness:Liable to lose interest once the initial fascination has passed

8 Chairman (CH) Role Definition:Charismatic steerer from non-productive strife towards focusing resources.. Positive Qualities:A capacity for treating and welcoming all potential contributors on their merits and without prejudice. A strong sense of objectives. Allowable Weakness:No more than ordinary in terms of intellect

9 SHAPER(SH) Role Definition:Forceful person who has the task in mind and makes sure everyone else does it. Positive Qualities:Drive and a readiness to challenge inertia, ineffectiveness, complacency or self-deception. Allowable Weakness:Proneness to provocation, irritation and impatience.

10 MONITOR EVALUATOR(ME)
Role Definition:The standard setter who knows how it was and how it should be done Positive Qualities:Judgement, discretion, hard headedness. Allowable Weakness:Lacks inspiration or the ability to motivate others.

11 TEAM WORKER(TW) Role Definition:The person wanting to get on with the job without the hassle of control issues. Positive Qualities:An ability to respond to people and to situations, and to promote team spirit. Allowable Weakness:Indecisiveness at moments of crisis.

12 Implementer/Company Worker(CW)
Role Definition:Converter of concepts, strategy and ideas into relevant plans for action. Positive Qualities:Organising ability, practical common sense, hard-working, self-discipline. Allowable Weakness:Lack of flexibility, unresponsiveness to unproven ideas.

13 COMPLETER FINISHER(CF)
Role Definition:The actual completer of jobs and the one concerned with fine details. Positive Qualities:A capacity for follow-through perfectionism Allowable Weakness:A tendency to worry about small things. A reluctance to “let go”.
