1 Limiting Reactants If the amounts of two reactants are given, the reactant used up first determines the amount of product formed. 22

2 Analogy Suppose you are preparing cheese sandwiches. Each sandwich requires 2 pieces of bread and 1 slice of cheese. If you have 4 slices of cheese and 10 pieces of bread, how many cheese sandwiches can you make? 23

3 Cheese Sandwich Products

4 Learning Check S 6 How many sandwiches can you make? 10
____ slices of bread 4 + ____ slices of cheese 4 = ____ sandwiches 2 slices of bread What is left over? ________________ What is the limiting reactant? Cheese 25

5 Hints for Limiting Reactant Problems
1. For each reactant amount given, calculate the moles (or grams) of a product it could produce. 2.The reactant that produces the smaller amount of product is the limiting reactant. 3. The number of moles of product produced by the limiting reactant is ALL the product possible. There is no more limiting reactant left. 27

6 Example. Identify the limiting reactant given 3. 5 g Cu reacts with 6
Example Identify the limiting reactant given 3.5 g Cu reacts with 6.0 g AgNO3 to yield Ag and Cu(NO3)2

7 Example. Identify the limiting reactant given 1
Example Identify the limiting reactant given 1.7 g of sodium reacts with 2.6 L of chlorine gas at STP producing sodium chloride

8 Example. What mass of lead (II) iodide will be produced when 16
Example What mass of lead (II) iodide will be produced when 16.4 g of lead (II) nitrate is added to 28.5 g of potassium iodide. What is the limiting reactant.
