1 Preparation for HEA Fellowship Application
Experience Sharing by Issra Pramoolsook, SFHEA Suranaree University of Technology July 6th, 2018

2 Focus of the Day Writing your Reflective Account of Practice (RAP) for the application Valuing diversity in the RAP in terms of content and organisation Sharing my experience in SFHEA application, especially my approach in writing my RAP

3 Evidence for Inspiration

4 Plan for the Day Part 1: Getting to know PSF and your work
Part 2: Getting to write your RAP

5 Part 1: Getting to know PSF and your work
Task 1: List all the activities that you do, did, and have done for teaching and support of learning at STOU. Do not care if they are big or small. Then, put all these activities into the 15 dimensions of the PSF, i.e. A1-5, K1-6, and V1-4.

6 Example: Writing test/exam papers for your course at STOU VS
Writing GAT/PAT exam items for NIETS

7 Part 1: Getting to know PSF and your work
Task 2: Think about the dimensions that fit with the activity assigned, and then compare with the other team

8 Part 2: Getting to write your RAP
Emphasise the rich areas of activity to be main themes of your RAP Turn the thin areas into the areas for improvement and strengthening Discuss among your team members on how you are going to organise the content of your RAP, e.g. what are your main themes

9 Example from Issra’s RAP (6,000 words)
Main account Preamble Primary experiences in teaching and support of learning Roles and responsibilities related to teaching Roles and responsibilities related to support of learning Case study 1: Researcher and mentor of young teachers/researchers Case study 2: Provider of academic services to society References for all sections

10 Preamble Intention to apply for the fellowship
Indication of my knowledge and understanding of the PSF Indication of the structure of my RAP

11 Primary experiences in teaching and support of learning
Career milestone Early career exposure to teaching and support of learning Focus on the foundation I had before the stories I put in the main sections

12 Roles and responsibilities related to teaching
Teaching at undergraduate level Teacher Course coordinator Textbook writer Teaching at postgraduate level Teaching the students in my MA/PhD programmes Teaching the students from other disciplines

13 Roles and responsibilities related to support of learning
Curriculum revision Quality assurance Advisor to undergraduate students Proofreading of abstracts and manuscripts for S&T colleagues and students

14 Case study 1: Researcher and mentor
Supervising MA and PhD students Coaching and co-authoring manuscripts for publication Examining proposals and dissertations Reviewing manuscripts for journals Promoting my MA/PhD programmes abroad

15 Case study 2: Academic service provider
Teaching outside SUT Assessing research tools Reviewing postgraduate curricula in other universities Cooperative education-related roles and responsibilities

16 Ideas for organizing content in one theme
The 4Rs Model learned from Professor Abby Cathcart (PFHEA) from QUT Reporting Relating Reasoning Reconstructing

17 Ideas for organizing content in one theme
My approach of Method-Results-Discussion-Conclusion similar to the RA structure One theme written as a self-contained island of MRDC A series of MRDC as a group of islands in your beautiful ocean of teaching and support of learning experiences

18 Some language tips for writing
Use of appropriate tenses according to the purposes of MRDC Use of first person pronoun ‘I’ and third person pronoun ‘they’ Use of PSF terminology, e.g. RAP, evidence- informed approach, and CPD Under-assumption and Over-assumption

19 Some language tips for writing (Cont.)
Use of quotations from students and colleagues as evidence Share also some unsuccessful stories that changed your teaching practice Emphasis on the impact on students, colleagues and yourself

20 Pitfalls from previous applications (mainly from Professor Abby Cathcart)
No education theory is referenced! Not enough V3! Not enough evidence of successful engagement with scholarship! Not enough specific examples! No quotations from students and colleagues! IMPACT is missing! e.g. ‘I write a textbook’ but the account has no proof that it has a positive impact on teaching and learning.

21 Looking at examples Excerpts from Issra’s RAP
Excerpts from SUT colleagues

22 Your own RAP Please share with me and colleagues at this session ‘interesting’ tips to write your APP

23 THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK
