1 Copyright law Zoe Midwinter

2 Definition Copyright is the law that protects original work created by someone so no one else can print, publish or perform that work. If someone else wished to share the work, they would have to obtain the rights or the license from the original author or artist. Infringement of copyright occurs when someone uses the work protected by copyright law without permission. These disputes are often resolved through court. The moral rights aspect of copyright law is the right for someone to be identified as the author of a piece of work. 3 How to find libraries of sound and music
A sound library is a website containing a collection of digital sound recordings that can then be used for whatever purpose the user chooses. Royalty free sound libraries include freesound.org, incompetech.com and soundbible.com. The content on these websites is copyrighted, but there is no need to pay a fee to use it.

4 Case Study – Queen & David Bowie vs Vanilla Ice
Queen and David Bowie’s collaborative song “Under Pressure” was originally released in 1981 and later on Queen’s 10th album “Hot Space” in The song reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, the group’s second number one in the country following the 1975 hit ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ It was also Bowie’s 3rd UK number one. Vanilla Ice’s song “Ice Ice Baby” was originally released in It was the most financially successful song on the album “To the Extreme.” However, the song uses the bassline from “Under Pressure” which was noticed by casual music fans, as well as Queen and David Bowie. Vanilla Ice had sampled their track without permission or license, but claimed that he had altered it to make it his own. In later interviews, he claimed that the previous statement was a joke. The case was never taken to court as it was obvious that the track was lifted from the original song without permission. He later paid royalties to Queen and Bowie and gave them all songwriting credit for “Ice Ice Baby.”
