1 LARP Phase II Secondary Collimator RC-0 and RC-1
Collimator Development Status Revised 01/29/09 LARP LHC PHASE II COLL RC1 - S. Lundgren 29 Jan No 1 /5

2 RC-1 Status 1st Mandrel is currently being local vendor w/promised delivery early February. 1st Hub has been partially machined and is awaiting Mandrel ID dimension for subsequent plating and final machining to meet the tolerances required for brazing. 1st Shaft Assembly is planned for brazing in early February. 1st Mandrel/Coil Assembly is planned for winding in late February. Drawing package of remaining machining operations for 1st RC -1 Jaw Assy. will be released for quotation next week. 2 more Half Shafts SLAC. The 2 remaining Shafts are still due from vendor. No promise date yet. Glidcop for the Jaws is vendor. Promised delivery mid-March!! LARP LHC PHASE II COLL RC1 - S. Lundgren 29 Jan No 2 /5

3 Tank design concept defined
Tank constructed from a standard 355.6mm dia. x 6.35mm wall type 304 Stainless Steel pipe. Combining the CERN bellows/tank base plate design with a modified pipe seems to make the most sense for us at this time. With the top portion of the pipe cut away, the collimator Jaws are installed. A water-cooled cover plate is then welded in. This cover geometry reduces the tank c-x to nearly rectangular (in the proximity of the Jaws) and should substantially lower the tank “Q”. Simulation of the fully cylindrical geometry previously proposed showed unreasonably high “Q” and heat load Weld-in cover will also contain view ports for observing Jaw facet damage. Flanges on each end provide access to the RF foils, end supports and ratchet mechanisms after the appropriate cool down period. LARP LHC PHASE II COLL RC1 - S. Lundgren 29 Jan No 3 /5
