LO: Language devices Simile: Uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike. Example: busy as a bee Metaphor: States a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison. A simile would say you are like something; this is more positive - it says you are something. Example: You are what you eat.

I stood in the garden and the wind, like a dressmaker, fitted my clothes to me, cold and indifferent. Did the elderly have minds like old wardrobes stuffed to overflowing with useless memories and take them out sometimes and look at them and ask themselves why they were there? Simile:

I remembered what Lili had said about brides being gift wrapped, and thought of them in their boxes. Dead people were put into boxes. Brides were given away. She had the effect of an open window on a frowsty room, ice in a lukewarm drink, wind on a sullen sea. … the seas of incomprehension, the misunderstandings that could never be cleared up because we seemed not only to speak different languages but to inhabit different countries. Write your own. One simile and one metaphor. Add detail. Draw a ‘picture’ with words. Should be about half a page in total.
