DO NOW Pick up lab sheet.
2
SURVEY OF THE ELEMENTS A Lab
3
SAFETY Please do not open any bottles
Please do not pick up the sodium or the mercury. Please do not pick up the neon tube.
4
TO DO Pick up a magnet (from the box).
Walk around to the lab desks with a piece of paper and a magnet. Write down the element symbol. Write down three physical properties of the element.
5
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES - these is not a complete list
For gases only Transparency Solid/Liquid/Gas Color For metals only: Magnetism For solids only - Luster (shiny) - Malleable (thin sheet) Ductile (drawn into a wire) Texture Shape
6
WHEN FINISHED – PERIODIC TABLE
Color all the elements that you observed in lab one specific color. Color all the remaining metals in a different color. Color the nonmetals in another color. Finally, color the metalloids each a still different color. You should have a total of four colors on your periodic table. Be sure to make a color key.
7
If you do not use this way, I will take off points.
DATA TABLE Set it up by: increasing atomic number. If you do not use this way, I will take off points.
8
DATA TABLE In a table, write the following information:
Element name and symbol Group number Period number Family name (see Ch. 6 and the Element Handbook) Metal, nonmetal, or metalloid. Three physical properties Electron configuration for each element. You can use the shorthand if you can do it correctly.
9
ANSWER FINAL TWO QUESTIONS
Using elements observed in the lab and in the SAME group, compare two elements with the same physical properties. What similarities do they have? Using elements observed in the lab and in the SAME group, compare two elements with different physical properties. What difference do they have?
10
TO TURN IN Attach colored periodic table to back of data table and questions. Due by the end of the period tomorrow.
11
DO NOW Get out your lab – get colored pencils if you need them.
You need to color your table, make the data table, and answer the two questions. Attach colored periodic table to back of data table and questions. Due by the end of the period.
