1 Motion and Newton’s Laws of Motion
In Chapter 4, Lessons Two through Four Motion and Newton’s Laws of Motion

2 What is Motion? Lesson 2 Motion is the movement of a distance, d, in a time interval, t. Sometimes it seems we aren’t moving, but we are moving relative to something like the sun or the earth.

3 Motion is relative Standing still, we are not moving relative to a tree or building, but we are moving relative to the sun (with the Earth, as it moves around the sun).

4 Motion is relative, Lesson 2
So to define motion, we need to say we’re moving relative to something else that is not moving (our frame of reference).

5 Speed, Lesson 2 There are two parts to speed: time interval and the distance covered during that time interval. Variations: instantaneous, average, and velocity. Mostly we use average speed: = total distance covered time interval Instantaneous: at one moment.

6 Speed vs velocity Velocity means speed of an object combined with direction its going. Speed uses distance/time while velocity uses displacement/time. Example……

7 Vectors Vectors are used to determine changes in velocity and new directions of objects. Let’s calculate some car velocities using these type of vector problems.
