ORAL ADMINISTRATION What about WRITING tests?
There is not a WRITING GUIDELINES section in the Oral/Signed Administration Guidelines manual because, except for the writing prompt, YOU CANNOT READ ANYTHING FROM THE WRITING TEST BOOKLET (OR THE WRITING SECTION OF AN ENGLISH I/II BOOKLET) ALOUD! In an “Oral Administration” of a paper WRITING test (or the WRITING section of an English I/II test), the only things you can read aloud are… Required reference materials (ex. dictionary for 6-8 and Eng. I/II) Allowable accommodations (ex. supplemental aid) The prompt (to read aloud the prompt is an “accessibility feature,” not a “designated support – aka accommodation”)

ORAL ADMINISTRATION What about WRITING tests? The ONLINE Writing/English I/II tests have Text-to-Speech available as a designated support; it reads aloud revising passages/test questions/answer choices. The TEST ADMINISTRATOR can ONLY read aloud the required reference materials and allowable accommodations, and the prompt. TA during a writing test

ORAL ADMINISTRATION “FULL” vs. “AT STUDENT REQUEST”
FULL (aka ORAL ADMIN Q&A in Test Hound) - TA reads ALL eligible text throughout the whole test (whether or not the student asks for it) AT STUDENT REQUEST - TA reads eligible text when the student asks for it
10
ORAL ADMINISTRATION Change of level of support
If allowed by the committee recommending the oral administration, a student may choose to change the level of support (go from reading some to all allowable text).
11
AT STUDENT REQUEST oral cannot be grouped in the same testing room
ORAL ADMINISTRATION Form 01 Booklets FULL ORAL – The TA should have his/her own booklet to read from. The TA booklet number and the booklet numbers of all of the students in the test group must MATCH – they need to all be FORM 01. (Exception: If the booklets don’t have form numbers (RETEST booklets), they are interchangeable.)TAs – check your bucket for Form 01s! AT STUDENT REQUEST – If the OA is at the student’s request, the TA may read over the student’s shoulder and doesn’t need a booklet. If the student has the option to change the level of support to full, give the student a form 01, so that the TA can have a matching booklet if they switch to full oral. FULL and AT STUDENT REQUEST oral cannot be grouped in the same testing room
12
ORAL ADMINISTRATION What order? Can I repeat?
In “FULL” OA, the test questions must be read aloud in the order they are presented in the test booklet. For reading assessments, the student must independently read the selection first, and then the test administrator may read aloud each test question in the order presented. In “AT STUDENT REQUEST” OA (requesting only certain words, phrases, or sentences to be read at various times), the test administrator will read aloud what the student requests when he or she requests it. No particular order must be followed. It’s OK to read aloud any word, phrase, or sentence in the test Q&As as many times as needed, and you can go back to re-read at the student’s request
13
ORAL ADMINISTRATION Test Security
TAs who give OA tests view secure test content, so they must sign the bottom portion of the TA Oath of Test Security and Confidentiality (in addition to the top part that everyone has to sign). Responding to test questions, making notes about test questions, discussing the content of the assessment at any time are prohibited. TAs may not write notes or calculations in a test booklet. TAs may not rephrase, clarify, or interpret any test content. Unauthorized verbal and nonverbal assistance may not be provided to students.
14
ORAL ADMINISTRATION Be familiar with subject-area terminology…
Test administrators must be familiar with content-specific terms and symbols associated with the subject-area assessment. That way, specific rules about subject-area abbreviations, symbols, equations, expressions, etc. will make sense and can be handled correctly. Math Examples Science Example
15
ORAL ADMINISTRATION From the manual… Subject-specific Guidelines…
For the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) program, every test administrator reading aloud secure test content must be trained on the guidelines in this document so that various types of test questions and answers are read aloud in a standardized manner.

Make sure to give every ticket to the CORRECT STUDENT!
ONLINE STAAR Make sure the CORRECT STUDENT takes the CORRECT TEST… CHECK YOUR NAME signs on computers remind students to look at the name on the test ticket. VERIFY the name of each student as test tickets are distributed. While it is OK for adults to log on to 3-5th grade students’ tests for them, DO NOT LOG ON TO THE TEST UNTIL THE STUDENT WHOSE TEST YOU’RE LOGGING ON TO IS PRESENT IN THE LAB. A student testing with the wrong T-L-C is a TESTING IRREGULARITY
ONLINE STAAR Test Tickets Check Personal Needs & Preferences (PNP) on test ticket & roster against Test Hound accommodations report Immediately notify CTC of any discrepancies – don’t let a student start a test with incorrect T, L, C. TEST TICKETS are SECURE materials After the test, collect all student test tickets before students leave the room Return test tickets to the CTC A student testing with the wrong T-L-C is a TESTING IRREGULARITY
32
ONLINE STAAR Starting the Test
Immediately prior to testing, test administrators must provide each student his or her own student test ticket. The student will launch the STAAR Online Testing Platform secure browser and log in using the username, password, and Session ID provided in the student test ticket. The test administrators will guide students through beginning the test, using the script in the TA manual. In grades 3-5, the test administrator may log student into the STAAR Online Testing Platform according to the directions in Appendix B of the Test Administrator Manual.
33
ONLINE STAAR During the Test…
Answer Students’ Questions About Online Tools Appendix C (3-5) – Online Tools Appendix B (6-8, EOC) – Online Tools Use the chart in Appendix C if a student has a question about one or more of the tools in the online system. If a student is having trouble locating a tool, use the ICON column to identify and point to the proper icon onscreen. If a student asks how a tool or button functions, you can read the information in the TEXT column. The information in this column may be read verbatim, paraphrased, or clarified as needed.
34
ONLINE STAAR Pausing the test
Students who have to take breaks away from their computers (ex. restroom break) should click the PAUSE button to pause the test. They will click the RESUME button to get back in to the test. If the test is paused for more than 30 minutes, it will log out. The student must use the test ticket to log back in.
35
ONLINE STAAR Submitting the Test
Test administrators should remind students that they should not click the Submit and End Test button until they have finished the test. Once a test is submitted, it cannot be restarted by the test administrator. Once a student has submitted a test, the student will no longer be active in the test session and cannot access the test with his or her student test ticket. The following steps submit the test and end the session for a student: 1. On the Review/End page of the test, click End Test. 2. Check the “I understand I cannot return to the test” box. 3. Select the Submit and End Test button.
36
ONLINE STAAR After the Test
The campus may choose to have the test administrator submit the test, instead of allowing students to do so. Collect all test tickets before students leave the testing room. Return test tickets (for students who tested and those who were absent), paperwork (rosters, accommodation lists, etc), and test administration materials (scratch paper, graph paper, etc) to the CTC at materials check-in. For students who were absent from the test, return these test tickets to your CTC. Students can use these test tickets during makeup testing. Test Tickets are SECURE, just like test booklets and answer documents. Students who cannot finish their tests due to illness or a testing irregularity should not click the Submit and End Test button. The student should log out of the test.
