P4 and M2 In order to complete P4 and M2, in the first chapter of your booklet you need to explain two theories of ageing. Discuss how the two theories relate to your celebrity. What are the consequences of your celebrity ‘following’ either of these theories.

Theories of ageing Psychosocial theories Disengagement theory
Activity theory Continuity theory You should have some notes from previous homework 20 mins to research and create a resource Feedback to the group A Summary of the theory with two references A scenario A discussion on how it relates to atleast one of your celebrities

Disengagement You should have some notes from previous homework

7
Disengagement theory Cumming, E and Henry, W.E. (1961)
This theory suggests that as individuals age, they disengage with society and lose interest in the world around them. This is seen to happen as opportunities for social engagement lessen. Why?
8
Disengagement theory Bromley (1974) stated that although some older people may fight against disengagement it will happen as they no longer have the same physical and mental capacity they had when they were younger. Do you agree with this theory ? What is Zimbardo’s response to this theory ? (see textbook page 170)
9
Issues that limit social interaction
Ill health Geographical mobility Retirement Ill health of friends and relatives Travel and technology See Whitehouse and Stretch (2010:170)
10
Disengagement This theory relates disengagement to older people preparing themselves for death.
11
Activity theory You should have some notes from previous homework
20 mins to research and create a resource Feedback to the group A Summary of the theory with two references A scenario A discussion on how it relates to atleast one of your celebrities
12
Activity theory Richards (1999) suggests that in retirement some individuals become active by engaging in hobbies, interests and community action. What are your views on this theory ?
13
Activity theory Bromley,D.B (1966) stated that although disengagement would happen, older people needed to focus on ‘activities’. These he stated would prevent older people from stagnation and a loss of mental and physical skills.
14
Continuity theory You should have some notes from previous homework
20 mins to research and create a resource Feedback to the group A Summary of the theory with two references A scenario A discussion on how it relates to atleast one of your celebrities
15
Continuity theory This theory suggests that individuals should maintain their sense of who they are and what their interests are as they get older. This is important and so individuals can continue to develop their self concept and self esteem.
16
Continuity theory It suggests that as people get older they may have different needs in relation to activity. Some may wish to withdraw to a disengaged lifestyle. Others may need to maintain social links. Both can result in the person being satisfied as they are maintaining their own identity and sense of self worth.

Independent task Mindmap how each of the theories applies to your individual “ Usain Bolt might…. “David Beckham might….. “Amy Winehouse might have….” (M2) Will they Disengage or stay active? What is the role of continuity?
