1
The Coordinate Plane Student Objective (s):
Students will discern a pattern in the coordinates of the reflected figure by plotting points and score 80% proficiency on an exit slip.
2
Vocabulary Words Axes - two perpendicular number lines used for locating points Origin – the intersection of the two axes Y-axis – the vertical number line X-axis – the hoizontal number line
3
The four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
Y-axis Quadrant I Quadrant II X-axis Quadrant IV Quadrant III
4
Signs of the quadrants. Y-axis (+,+) (-,+) X-axis (-,-) (+,-)
5
The Ordered Pair (5,10) X- coordinate Y- coordinate
6
The Origin Point Y-axis Origin Point (0,0) X-axis
7
Always start at the origin to plot a point.
8
Direction of Movement for the X-Coordinate
Y-axis If the x-coordinate is positive move this way If the x-coordinate is negative move this way X-axis
9
Direction of movement for the Y-coordinate
Y-axis If the y-coordinate is positive move this way If the y-coordinate is negative move this way X-axis
10
Name the given point. Y-axis (1,3) (-2,1) X-axis (-5,-1) (4,0)
11
How To Plot a Point on the Coordinate Plane
Y-axis (4,4) Next move on the Y-axis X-axis (-3,-1) First move out on the X-axis
12
Plot each point and describe how to get to the point from the origin.
(8,–7) (4,0) (–4,–5) (0,–9) (7,12) From the origin, move to the right 8 units, then down 7 units. From the origin, move to the right 4 units, then stop (Stay on the x-axis.). From the origin, move to the left 4 units, then down 5 units. From the origin, don’t move to the right or left (stay on the y-axis), then move down 9 units. From the origin, move to the right 7 units, then up 12 units.
