Seed germination is suppressed in the dark (A) and stimulated in sunlight (B), which is enriched with red light. When sunlight is filtered through adult leaves, red light is absorbed for photosynthesis, whereas far-red light is not. This enrichment of far-red light inhibits seed germination (C). When adult plants are removed via herbivory or senescence, the enrichment of red light stimulates germination in underlying seeds (D).
