Misconception Everyone expected a short war
Didn’t realize that technological changes coupled with Nationalism would lead to a long & bloody war. Stalemate was eminent. Led to a War of Attrition. War of Attrition = war in which single battle victory does not determine outcome of war. Each side trying to outlast the other. Wait for one side to run out of resources and seek a peace treaty. High casualty rate. Resources = food, money, munitions, soldiers, etc.
