1 Introduction to Applications
What’s the problem with applications? They reveal your weaknesses. They’re designed to screen you out. They’re not a good tool for getting interviews. They’re not used in many small businesses. Why bother with them? They’re important in larger organizations and government. They force you to organize your experience. Many employers request them. © JIST Publishing, Inc. 2 The Last Word on Applications
An application may not get you a job, but it can get you screened out of being interviewed for one! When possible, avoid the application process. Directly contact the person who can hire you. When you fill out an application, make sure it is neat, accurate, and complete—a positive report on you and your qualifications. © JIST Publishing, Inc. Duplication Prohibited.

7 Tips for Completing the Application
Use your JIST Card. Follow the instructions. Use an erasable black pen. Be neat. Be accurate. Fill in every blank. Be honest. Write clearly and neatly. Emphasize skills and accomplishments. Mention volunteer work and hobbies. Get permission before using references. Sign the application when requested. © JIST Publishing, Inc. Duplication Prohibited.

8 Computer-Based Applications
Make sure your spelling, grammar, and capitalization are correct. Have your JIST Card with you at the computer so that you’ll have all the information you need. If you are completing the electronic application at the potential employer’s location, ask the staff there how to use the system if you are unsure. Take your time. Read the directions carefully, fill in all of the required information, and double-check your work. © JIST Publishing, Inc. Duplication Prohibited.
