The US Coast Guard was worried that figures in the water were enemy submarines. Sometimes these reports were false but the guards were nervous.
A German submarine landed on Long Island. The spies carried explosives that were meant to destroy bridges, tunnels, etc. in New York City.
People lived in constant fear of an attack from Germany on the East Coast and Japan on the West Coast. Americans wear afraid to travel, go to the beach, and live their daily lives without being nervous it could be their last day on Earth.
