Latitude lines – run horizontally around the earth and are measured north and south of the equator (0-90) Longitude lines – run vertically around the earth and are measured east and west of the Prime Meridian (0-180) Reading a Map

Reading a Map The earth is divided into 4 hemispheres north, south, east, and west

Reading a map Equator – Located at 0 degrees latitude and divides the northern and southern hemispheres Prime Meridian – Located at 0 degrees longitude it divides the eastern and western hemispheres

Cardinal Directions – 4 main directions north, south, east, and west Compass Rose – shows the directions and the intermediate directions northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest Legend – tells what symbols on the map mean Reading a Map Compass Rose

Legend – tells what the symbols on the map represent Map Scale – how much larger the actual object is than the map and helps calculate distance
