1
Application of the Fuel Cell
Erasmus+ Sustainability by Biotechnology Application of the Fuel Cell Lorenz Kovsca Marie-Céline
2
Benefits Drawbacks Works independent from the weather Storable
No harmful emissions Hydrogen slowly defuses out of the tank Very explosive Not many providers of hydrogen
3
Mobile Usage: Automobiles
Higher range than common electric cars (more than 500km) Quick refilling (5-15min) At the moment few filling stations First fuel cell car produced in series: Toyota Mirai
4
Mobile Usage: Power supply for satellites and space travel
First type Second type Energy storage charged by solar cells Energy storage for short usage times E.g.: Start of a satellite, short space missions (e.g.: spaceshuttle)
5
Mobile Usage: Aviation
Same mass of Hydrogen stores more energy than kerosine, BUT has a bigger volume => commercial use Prototypes from Airbus, Boeing, DLR… HY4 of the DLR
6
Mobile usage: Submarines
Very quiet H2O from the fuel cells: used as sanitary water =>Longer commitment time, without stopping at a harbour For example: Type 212 A (Germany and Italy) (only currently used submarine of Germany)
7
Stationary Commitment
Electric power station: Prevention of power breakdown
8
Portable Applications
Portable fuel cells can be used as power banks for example for charging mobilephones, notebooks and Mp3- Players several times No plug is necessary
