3 A New Kind of Revolution
Why Britain?

4 Industrial Revolution
During the 1700’s a new era emerged where the use of machines replaced hand tools and is known as the Industrial Revolution Where did the Industrial Revolution start? Quickly and quietly get into groups of 2-3.

5 Advancements in Agriculture
New inventions/practices such as the Seed Drill invented by Jethro Tull allowed farmers to grow more food which led to a population increase. Wealthy landowners could also buy fields that had been shared by both rich and poor farmers. The farms were then fenced. This transformation is known as the Enclosure Movement.

6 Shift of Population As farmers were thrown off their land they began to leave the countryside and move into the cities searching for work.

7 The Factors of Production
1) Land-All of a places natural resources-(Ex: coal, iron and water) 2) Labor-Growing population capable of performing work. 3) Capitol-$$$$$$-Britain was generally prosperous and people had money to spend.

8 A Revolution in Textiles
This revolution began with the Textile Industry (Cloth). Weaving was a Cottage Industry-a craft occupation performed in the home. The craft was completely changed as a result of the Industrialization process of changing to power driven machinery.

9 Inventors Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin-which solved the problem of pulling seeds from raw cotton blossoms. Richard Arkwright invented the Spinning Frame which spun stronger, thinner thread. John Kay invented the Flying Shuttle-which doubled the speed at which a weaver could weave the thread into fabric.

10 Factories These new inventions made it necessary to house these industrial machines in buildings known as a factory.

11 Steam Power Changes Everything
British inventers learned how to harness the force of steam to drive machines which transformed the world. Steam engine invented by James Watt. Invention of the steam engine meant that factories no longer had to be built near supplies of water but could instead be built closer to workers homes.

12 Steam Engine Steam engines also made it possible to build near ports from which raw materials and finished goods could be shipped. The steam powered train made it possible to ship goods to faraway markets.

13 Industrialization Begins to Spread
Britain attempted to outlaw the shipment of certain machines as well as forbade certain craftsmen from leaving the country. It was just a matter of time before knowledge of the new technology spread beyond the borders of Britain.

14 Spread of Industry Industry spreads first to America.
Industry was introduced to France following the Napoleonic Wars and the railroad paved the way for industry to make its way into Germany. Industry was fairly late in getting to Japan-even though they are one of the world’s industrial leaders today.
