Servant Leadership
2
The Servant as a Leader ~Robert Greenleaf
“Do those served grow as persons? Do they while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? A true natural servant reacts by listening first.” Is servant leadership one of those new concepts in leadership? No – it is the original concept in leadership found in Christianity, ancient Confucianism, Buddhism, ancient Greece and is the basis of most philosophies and religions. It is also what our founding fathers considered when they built the constitution around Public Servants – all of us. Our jobs at all levels can be found in this slide – do those around grow? Do those around us become healthier, wiser, freer, etc? Think about the opposite of each of these statements? Do I tear people down? Do I limit their human capacity to grow? Do I talk first or listen first? Do I demand compliance, - or create an atmosphere of helpfulness?

Leadership Pipeline - Key Principles
Each transition requires new learning (and “unlearning”) New skills, behaviors and results New values Different time allocation Development is cumulative Successful development at one transition enhances probability of success at next transition Incomplete development, or skipping a transition, can hinder success at next transition The pipeline may become clogged, blocking the flow of talent Downward pressure on the pipeline Development of leaders is compromised
