5
What is Matter? Matter is the stuff around you
Matter is anything that has mass and volume Volume is the amount of space that something takes up Mass is how much of something there is
6
What is Matter? Matter is made up of extremely tiny particles called atoms and molecules with spaces in between them
7
What are the 3* States of Matter?
Solid Liquid Gas *Plasma *Colloid *Bose-Einstein Condensates Brainpop-States of Matter
8
States of Matter- Properties
We use the word “property” to describe aspects of what a material is like (ex: strong, hard, runny, flexible, compressible) These properties help us decide on whether matter is solid, liquid or gas
9
States of Matter- Properties
Solid Liquid Gas Keep the same shape Take the shape of the container Fill the whole container Stay where they are put Runny- can be poured Spread out quickly Are difficult to move through Are quite easy to move through Are very easy to move through Can’t be compressed Are very difficult to compress Compressible- easy to compress
10
Properties of Matter The ideas shown aren’t perfect- they don’t work for ALL solids, liquids and gases Some materials have only some of the properties and others have the properties of more than one state of matter
11
Worksheet- States of Matter
Fill in the table by identifying each material as a solid, liquid or gas. Include an explanation for each.
