The aim of this workshop is to Explore what we mean by “formal” alternative approaches to CPD Share experiences Consider why we might do it Identify what it might look like in practice Share the draft resources with you Get at least some of you to try it!!!!

Learning from Colleagues -What do we mean by formal approaches? What did we have on the list? Shadowing Mentoring Buddying Learn and Share Other?

What do we mean by Shadowing? Who has experience of this? What did it involve? What was the purpose? Was it valuable? Shadowing is the process whereby an individual “shadows” or follows someone in their work role, for a period of time, in order to enhance their own performance

What do we mean by? Buddying? Who has experience of this? What did it involve? What was the purpose? Was it valuable? A peer to peer support system usually used to help a new member of staff to settle in. It could also be used to support a member of staff to adjust to a new role.

What do we mean by Mentoring? Who has experience of this? What did it involve? What was the purpose? Was it valuable? The relationship is centred on the development of skills, confidence and competence and is often referred to as a “learning conversation”. A mentor relationship, although very supportive and friendly, is more formal than with a buddy. The pairing of a more skilled or experienced person with someone with less skilled or experienced with the mutually agreed goal of helping the less skilled person to develop their work related skills, knowledge and understanding.

What do we mean by Learn and Share? Who has experience of this? What did it involve? What was the purpose? Was it valuable? The relationship is centred on the development of skills, confidence and competence and is often referred to as a “learning conversation”. A mentor relationship, although very supportive and friendly, is more formal than with a buddy. A professional development tool which involves bringing staff together to share practice, experience and challenges in a semi structured environment with a view to developing, skills knowledge and understanding across the organisation.

Why do it? What value might it bring? Draws on the expertise which exists and facilitates the sharing of best practice across your organisation Supports the professional development of new staff and staff new to the role Can aid recruitment and retention of staff Contributes to the culture of a learning organisation Promotes team working Relatively cost effective and easy to implement – on site, no travel, can be built in around your schedules CPD activity is centred on the needs of your staff and your organisation, so highly relevant and context specific
