1 Help Mark get to the correct floor
Help Mark get to the correct floor. He is riding up and down on an elevator trying to get to the 18th floor. He is on the 14th floor, but forgot his brief case 3 floors below and had to go down to get it. Then he accidentally pushed the button for 9 floors above. When he got back on the elevator he had to ride it down with 6 strangers a total of 5 floors. Next, a little kid got on and pushed all the buttons. Mark rode the elevator up 2 floors before he could get off. What floor is he on? How many more floors should he go and in what direction?

Counters Number lines Rules

5 Flipbook for adding integers
Counters: One positive and one negative create a zero pair. You line all the positive counters up then above or below place all the negative counters. Take away all the zero pairs. What you have left is the answer Number lines Rules

8 Flipbook for adding integers
Number lines: Always start at zero then move to the first number. From there move in the correct direction the number of spaces indicated by the second number Counters Rules

10 Integers How do you add? Positive/Negative: What are they?
Methods to use? How do you subtract? Make a picture?

11 Dry Erase Boards: Without using integer chips or a number line, how could you describe the method for adding integers with different signs?

12 Same sign: Add and keep the sign
Different signs: Subtract and keep the sign of the larger value Brain Pop:

Rules: When adding the same signs: Add and keep the sign. When adding different signs subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the larger number. Counters Number lines:

Same sign: add and keep the sign Different sign: Subtract and keep sign of larger value. Integers Methods to use? How do you subtract? Make a picture?

16 Ticket Out The Door Tell whether the sum will be positive or negative: Use a number line: -5 + 6 Add using any method: (-8) + -15 11 +( -11) + -5
