Structural analogy between osteon and artery. Cross-sectional view of osteon and artery. They share the basic structure: the vascular lumen is supported by an endothelial layer, followed by a matrix-rich vascular sheath, where scattered mesenchymal cells are found. These mesenchymal cells differentiate into osteoblastic lineages in both organs. FGF23, fibroblast growth factor 23.
