GIFTED GAZETTE 1.5 Sept. 11th - Sept. 15th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Greek Mythology and Mythical Allusions! This week we will… read, watch, and discuss common Greek myths finish reading The Magic Treehouse: Hour of the Olympics continue the reading skill: summarizing Vocabulary review is up on Quizlet!!! Language/Writing: This week we will… identify and write compound sentences. use khanacademy.org and search simple and compound sentences for at-home review use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills. use the R.A.C.E. strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, & Expand/Explain thoughts) when responding to text. Spelling: Words with /ch/and /tch/ Math: This week we will… learn standard method for long division master 3’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test Project of the Week (P.O.W.): The 7 Natural Wonders of the World in-class assignment is due Friday. Research: Choose a character/god/goddess/mythological monster to research in preparation for our Greek style Wax Museum…tentatively scheduled for Friday 9/29. Try using a kid-friendly search engine like KidRex.org , kiddle.co , or KidzSearch.com or view teacher webpages for more links. Books can be checked out in school library, public library, and classroom. On-Level Spelling: Choose, kitchen, marching, touch, chatter, sketched, chant, chance, branch, hitch, ketchup, cheap, chopped, latch, chef, patch, snatch, arch, stretching, pitcher, stove, goal, mows, chemical, checkers Classical Roots Vocab: Lesson 5 part~ “separate piece, part” studi~”learn, study” Please use pages in the orange workbook for studying and preparation. Answers can be written on looseleaf. Friday Test Schedule: Reading: Cold-read comprehension with summarizing Vocabulary: Lesson 5 test Language: compound sentences test and mentor sentence skills Spelling: test Math: Fluency Friday Test for 3’s Long Division test-Friday Look for your child’s MobyMax login and password this week. This is an individualized computer-based curriculum that students can access from both school and home! A note from the teachers It was wonderful meeting all of our students’ families at Open House. We feel so lucky to have such wonderful parents supporting our kids this year! A great big THANK YOU for all of the wish list items that were sent in to our classrooms. We plan to hold a Greek style Wax Museum where students dress and speak in character for a roving audience at school. Students should start thinking of the character/god/goddess/mythological monster they would like to portray and begin researching information. Look for more info this week…tentative date is Friday 9/29. Please continue to study multiplication facts nightly to ensure confidence and success. Try using mathfactspro.com or mathfactscafe.com for nightly fluency practice. Everyone will test on the 3’s times tables this Friday. Ms. Morrison & Ms. Doescher
