2 Fig. 1 Flowchart of inclusion. (A) Symptomatic subject selection. *After pilot examinations of 21 subjects the age range was modified to easier recognize the OA subjects (as OA prevalence increases with age). **Except of two subjects with KL 0 included in pilot examinations. (B) Asymptomatic subject selection. *After pilot examinations of 25 subjects the age range was modified to match the symptomatic group. **Seventeen asymptomatic subjects had to be excluded from the analyses because of previous history or present problems in their knee of which they did not report at the inclusion. 3 Fig. 2 Knee pain map. Photograph of the knee with overlying templates (black lines) for assessment of local and regional pain originally described by Thompson et al.8 The pain map findings were divided into five groups for the evaluation of the associations between knee pain location and location of structural changes in MRI as follows: 1) medial pain region including both local pain in superior medial, medial joint line and/or inferior medial locations and regional pain in medial region (unless classified as diffuse pain) 2) lateral pain region including both local pain in superior lateral, lateral joint line and/or inferior lateral locations and regional pain in lateral region (unless classified as diffuse pain) 3) patellar pain region including both local and regional patellar pain (unless classified as diffuse pain) 4) posterior pain region including both local and regional posterior pain (unless classified as diffuse pain) and 5) diffuse pain defined as >3 areas of localized pain, >2 regions of pain, or >1 area of localized pain and 1 non-overlapping region of pain.
