The Skeletal System
2
The Skeletal System Bones protect our vital organs.
Inside the bone is jelly-like bone marrow. There is red marrow and yellow marrow.
3
Skeletal System There are approximately 360 bones in your body when your are born There are about 206 bones in your body when you are about
4
Skeletal System There are thin films of slippery fluid between the bones which is called cartilage. The functions of the skeletal system are protecting the organs, giving us shape and support, storing minerals and fat, and producing blood cells.
5
Skeletal System Your cranium protects your brain.
If you didn’t have any bones you’d be a big blob! Your backbones or vertebrae help you stand up straight.
6
Skeletal system Your bones manufacture red blood cells and white blood cells. The smallest bones are in our ears: the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup.
7
SKELETAL SYSTEM You need joints which provide flexible connections between the bones. Did you know tha Humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks!
8
Types of Bones Long bones-work as levers (Ex: femur)
Short bones- are short and cube shaped (Ex: wrists) Flat bones- broad surfaces (Ex: sternum) Irregular bones- do not fit into the other categories (Ex: vertebrae)
9
Joints Hinge joint of the knee Pivot joint of the neck
Immovable or cartilaginous joint of the skull Ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder Gliding or Sliding joints of the hand You know that parts of your skeleton can move. They can move because of the way bones are joined together.
10
Parts of Bone Compact or Dense bone- hard and protective
Spongy or Cancellous bone- is inside the compact bone and is porous
11
Marrow Red marrow- found inside of long bones and makes blood cells
Yellow marrow- stores fat
