John 16:7-15

2. Introduction In John 16 Jesus is going away
But he will send a “helper” - The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God’s active presence in the world

3. 1. The Holy Spirit is sent to the Church
Helper/comforter/advocate/counsellor - one who draws alongside to come to our aid
Note that the Holy Spirit is a person not a “force”
Holy Spirit brings life - e.g. John 3, Romans 8
The Holy Spirit unites us to God - John 14
The Holy Spirit brings us to maturity - unity, love, spiritual fruit, gifts, guidance etc.

4. 2. The Holy Spirit bears witness to the world
It’s easy to feel intimidated in evangelism
But we’re not alone
The Spirit is with us - empowers us, and works in the hearts of our hearers

5. 3. The Spirit glorifies Christ
Spirit’s role is to point us to Jesus
Be wary of teaching on the Spirit that doesn’t point to Christ
Spirit brings us into the family - It’s by the Spirit we cry “abba” Father
