Pre-AP 9/17 Pick up the lab rubric from the side table
Take out your separation of mixture lab, and something to write with (maybe a highlighter as well) We will discuss how to write a lab report today and go over the lab report expectations for this formal lab write-up (DUE September 9/28). The ppt explaining expectations is on the website. HW: “Old Dead Guys Scavenger Hunt” FYI: Quiz over Elements 1-20 on Friday
2
Separation of Mixtures
Lab report format
3
Top of Lab You and your partners names need to be on the top right hand side of the lab You need to include the date THE LAB WAS PERFORMED Include the period of class you are in
4
Neatness and Organization
Pertinent info Lab NEEDS TO BE TYPED (12pt font, single spaced, times new roman) Lab sections in order of the rubric Mistakes need to be lined through or whited out if you wrote calculations (doesn’t apply to this lab) No more than THREE grammatical errors Do not type on back page (one sided)
5
Title The title must be included at the top of the lab
It must pertain to the actual lab (pre-AP lab report is not sufficient)
6
Purpose/Hypothesis PURPOSE: Introduces concepts from the lab and any background information that relates to the lab. The introduction is not copied from the lab sheet that was given to you. You introduce this lab in your own words. MINIMUM of FIVE SENTENCES HYPOTHESIS: If/then statement. ONE SENTENCE ALWAYS. TESTABLE STATEMENT
7
Hypothesis ALWAYS an if/then question that relates to the lab. ONE SENTENCE Explains the reason for doing the lab or the question to be answered
8
Materials List any and all materials that you used in performing the lab Include size (i.e. 25 mL), quantity, gradation, etc.
9
Procedure Should be in numbered steps that are complete sentences and detailed enough that someone else could carry out the lab. DETAILED, DETAILED, DETAILED (not a paragraph)
10
DATA TABLE The data table should be included in the lab after procedures and before observations. This table is used to write the data you collected during the lab and/or the data you used to perform the lab If you have quantitative date, make sure you include a unit. Qualitative data may be included here as well in table form
11
Observations In paragraph form using proper grammar, describe in detail the observations that you made when performing this lab. FIVE SENTENCES MINIMUM Observations cannot be too long or too detailed. If you think you’ve written enough, you’re probably only half way there!
12
Calculation section NONE FOR THIS LAB, so you will skip this on the rubric for now
13
GRAPHS NONE FOR THIS LAB, so you will skip this on the rubric for now
14
Results table This is a simple table that you will come up with which will include the results of the lab. This is different than a data table. It is not the data you collected, it is only the results you concluded from performing the lab.
15
1st Conclusion Describe in paragraph form what can be concluded from the results you got when running the experiment.
16
2nd Conclusion RESTATE HYPOTHESIS and tell me whether of was rejected (wrong) OR whether or not it was accepted (your data proved you were right). Explain this with support from your data in the lab.
17
3rd Conclusion Recommend THREE changes you would of made in the lab for you to have more successful results Explain these changes
18
Discussion Questions Write the analysis and conclusion questions here. These questions are located on your separation of mixtures lab packet. The entire question must be included or you will lose half of your points. The answers to these questions do not have to be in complete sentences These questions will change throughout the year
19
Side notes A hard copy will be due in class September 28th (I AM OUT THIS DAY, IT IS STILL DUE) ing me a copy is not acceptable. I need a printed off copy of the lab. You will also need to submit this report on turnitin.com. I will give you the access codes in class or via remind101
