Agenda:
Do Now: What is a just war according to the Catholic Church? Why do you think there are so many standards that must be met before the Church considers something a just war? How do you feel about this doctrine?
Discussion and evaluation.
Homework: Evaluate the Civil War and its leaders based on the just war doctrine. (Google Classroom: “Was the Civil War a Just War?”) Due Tuesday (tomorrow).

2. Just War Doctrine of the Catholic Church
Must be decided by the people in charge.
The damage being inflicted by the aggressor is grave, lasting, and certain.
All other options have been explored.
War as defensive measure must have serious prospect of success.
It cannot produce more or greater evil.
There is a duty to protect and help innocent victims. Helpers must never try to influence who they are helping.
There is a moral obligation to intervene when basic human rights are being seriously violated.
Economic sanctions must be used carefully and not to punish. It cannot just affect everyone (indiscriminate). The purpose has to be clear and obtainable.

3. Short Debate: Was the Civil War a Just War? Yes or No
Round 1: Opening Statement Yes it was because…… No it was not because ……. Round 2: Rebuttal Point out the flaws in the other team’s position. Round 3: Defense and summary Defend your position and summarize your most important points. Convince the judges Points: Good, convincing arguments Clarity Respectfulness and teamwork Judges: Keep track of points and write a rationale of why one team won over the other.
