Fall 2017

Committee Projects Changes to informed consent requirements for potential living donors—approved Dec (effective June 1, 2017) Resources developed to assist transplant hospitals with new requirements: Informed consent requirement policy checklist for professionals Patient version of informed consent requirements (English & Spanish) Available on the OPTN web site: Resources>Living Donation During public comment the committee received responses concerning the complexity of the informed consent policy requirements. In response the committee prepared a checklist that living donor programs may voluntarily use for the informed consent of potential living donors. Additionally, the committee developed a plain language version of the informed consent policies that transplant hospital may want to provide to potential donors. An evaluation revealed that the informed consent policy is written at a post college graduate reading level. The plain language version is written at an 8th grade reading level and is available in both English and Spanish.

Committee Projects New resource for transplant candidates: How to Find a Living Donor – Make Your Transplant Happen Evidence-based resource addressing proven strategies for asking others to consider being a living donor Includes “Evidence Report” for transplant professionals Will be available on OPTN and Transplant Pro web sites Emerging research supports that barriers to transplant candidates’ pursuit of living donor transplantation can be reduced by early and repeated education, outreach programs, and advocate programs (e.g., those that help transplant candidates identify “champions” to share their need for an organ donor with their support community). This new resource addresses effective education, outreach and advocate programs so that transplant candidates may better understand the benefits and risks of living donor transplantation, or learn the skills for asking others to consider organ donation. The project included a separate Evidence Report for transplant professionals.
