2 This Day in History Galileo, Lincoln, Hitler, Gandhi, National Parks, and Japan Speaker Note/Cue: Go through the page by highlighting the names/places mentioned

3 Unit: Big Ideas and EQ’s
Major individuals and groups from the Holocaust Atrocities committed during the Holocaust and how they have affected the present Major symbols from the Holocaust and how they are used today How and why do societies turn objects into symbols? What symbols most affects my life?

4 Unit CC Standards SS-WH : Assess Iowans or groups of Iowans who have influenced world history SS-WH : Examine and explain how the perspectives of individuals and societies impact world history RL : Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. What?!? Is that a Reading Literature standard in History? > Speaker notes/Verbal Cues: After reading each standard, address what it will look like/mean to be doing a Co-Unit with the English classes

5 Scavenger Hunt and K-W-L Chart
Directions: (5-10 minutes) With your quick-pair partner(s) and a piece of paper Find 4 symbols around the room and Explain what their meanings are 2 symbols of historical significance 2 other symbols Directions: (5-10 minutes) Complete your own version of a K-W-L Chart for the Holocaust There are extra chart papers in the back or you can use your prefered method as long as Know, Want to Know, and Learned are covered. Speaker Notes/Verbal Cues: Ask for a couple examples of what a symbol is and be sure to repeat each. Allow about 10 minutes for the scavenger hunt before formally addressing directions for the KWL chart. Give student C about 5 minutes with their partner to check in and make sure they understand the Scavenger Hunt and give direct instructions for the K-W-L chart.

Non-Historical: DMACC and UNI posters Inspirational Quote Posters Plants Students Economic Posters Clock What else? Speaker Notes/Cures: Ask for student examples before moving to this slide. Then discuss the highlighted examples. Be sure to explain why the clock can fit into both categories.

7 Symbols from Iowans in History
The Red Cup: Was made in Oskar Schindler’s factory by Phyllis Karp, Karp was saved from Auschwitz by Schindler then moved to Des Moines in 1947 *The cup is symbolic to Karp as hope for a better tomorrow, “This will remind me, every day, that there is a better tomorrow.” Think-Pair-Share what does this cup mean to you when you first saw? What about now? Speaker Notes/Cues: Allow for note taking time before talking. Give a verbal cue that anything highlighted or start needs to make it into notes. Explain/remind that Auschwitz was a death camp. TPS with whoever is closest to them, give about 5 minutes.

8 Symbols from Iowans in History
Identification Badge: *Under Nazis Germany, minority groups were forced to wear id badges. This was worn by Charles Anolik, a Jewish man, in Lithuania. Anolik lived in the Slobotka Ghetto.* Quick Write: 2+ sentences on why the Nazis would force someone to wear id symbols and live in bordered Ghettos? Speaker notes/cues: Give time for notes before explaining what minority groups and Ghettos meant in 1940’s Germany. Do this by asking students what a minority group is and what a ghetto is. After some time spent on this make any necessary clarifications and summarize what had just been said. Have students do the quick write in their notes and then take/pick volunteers to read for the class.

9 Unit Housekeeping (all papers in back and on google)
Unit Video Project Assignment : *Due 11th with an in class work day on the 7th. Come to class tomorrow with any questions. We will go over the sheet at the beginning. Similar format to the Civil War Video from last semester Extra Credit: Comic Book Q and A Holocaust Need To Know Terms I suggest printing these off Speaker Notes/Cues: Read everything verbatim. Before reading make sure no one starts to pack up so student C does not get distracted without drawing attention to student C.
