Building Better Clinical Training Experiences: A Learning Collaborative Webinar Presenters: Annie Rutter, MD Jim Ballard, EdD Emily Walters

2 Agenda Describe overall background
Describe each of three participation options Discuss questions

3 Overarching Goal Develop three projects over three years to support educational collaboratives to improve administrative efficiencies for community preceptors Participants can choose to participate in: Project 1: Pilot student onboarding resources and processes Project 2: Pilot standardized preceptor onboarding and engagement resources Project 3: Pilot both standardized student AND preceptor onboarding projects

4 Expectations for all Projects
Integrate multiple STFM developed tools (specific for each project) Participate in a (1.5 day) learning communities to share/learn about intervention approaches Provide status reports Disseminate findings broadly and agree to participate in a synthesis report Conduct standardized pre/post measurement to assess: Impact on preceptor administrative burden Learning experience for students Evaluation components to include Surveys to clerkship directors, practice managers, and preceptors Conducting interviews of 3-5 preceptors and practice managers with questions provided by STFM Project leaders to visit to learn more about project implementation, successes, and challenges (not all sites will receive a visit)

5 Incentives for Participating (all projects)
Opportunities for scholarship Recognition in STFM publications, including a listing on the STFM website Press releases (newspaper and local chapters) A logo/graphic/badge to display on communications Announcement for department communications Ribbon for badge at STFM conferences Paid attendance at Learning Collaborative meeting

6 Selection Up to five departments of Family Medicine or departments that administer Family Medicine clerkships will be selected for EACH of the three projects preference given to those that are collaborating with at least 2 or more other specialties/departments/professions Must include at least one Family Medicine department or departments that administer family medicine clerkships

7 Project 1 Family medicine departments, ideally in collaboration with other specialties and professions, will pilot student onboarding resources and processes

8 Project 1: Goals Ease the administrative burden on community faculty (preceptors) at ambulatory clinical sites by standardizing documentation Help the preceptor integrate the student more easily into the practice Increase student value to the practices Aid teaching programs in administering clinical clerkship (rotation) experiences

9 Project 1: Resources and Processes
Sites to receive a variety of STFM developed tools to implement into student onboarding processes including: Student passport Student handout: “How to be Awesome in an Ambulatory Clinical rotation” Three online modules for students Creating a high quality note Performing a medication reconciliation Motivational interviewing Self-developed pre-clinical curriculum to meet goals/objectives for AAMC’s 2008 Recommendations for Preclerkship Clinical Skills

10 Project 2 Family medicine departments, ideally in collaboration with other specialties and professions, will pilot standardized preceptor onboarding and engagement resources

11 Project 2: Goals Ease the administrative burden on community faculty (preceptors) at ambulatory clinical sites by standardizing documentation Engage community preceptors Encourage and reward teaching Enhance the quality of training at ambulatory sites

12 Project 2: Resources and Processes
Sites to receive a variety of STFM developed tools to implement into preceptor onboarding and engagement processes to include: A faculty appointment onboarding process Participation in the ABFM Preceptor Improvement Program using: New preceptor development competencies Online self-assessment form tied to new developmental competencies TeachingPhysician.org assigned readings Online STFM course of giving feedback Use of new preceptor recognition program Use of new teaching practice recognition program

13 Project 2: Additional Incentives
Free access to the onboarding and engagement materials, including TeachingPhysician.org, Implementation ideas, strategies, and guidance

14 Project 3 Family medicine departments, ideally in collaboration with other specialties and professions, will pilot standardized student onboarding resources and processes outlined in project 1 AND will pilot standardized preceptor onboarding and engagement resources outlined in project 2 This is a combination of Projects 1 & 2 for those who wish to take a more comprehensive approach All materials and requirements listed previously will apply
