We know the following of Newton’s equations of motion:
vf = vi + at 2) d = vit + (½)at2 3) vf = vi + 2a(d) For each of the problems to follow, write down all known and unknown quantities. Then select which equation you will use.

Example 1 Let’s apply this and solve for acceleration.
A bike starts off at rest, then accelerates to a speed of 6 m/s over a distance of 30 m. What is the acceleration of the bike?
3
Example 2 An airplane takes off. It accelerates down the runway at 4 m/s2 for 30 seconds, then lifts off the ground. What is the distance traveled before takeoff?
4
Example 3a Suppose a train starts from rest (v = 0) and accelerates east at 0.5 m/s2. What will the train’s velocity be after 2 minutes? v = 0 t = 0 v = ? t = 120 s 0.5 m/s2

Example 3b Consider the previous example. What will the displacement of the car be after 2 minutes? a = 0.5 m/s2 X=??????

Example 4: The Dragster Imagine a drag race down a straight track.
The racer can generate a constant acceleration of 50 m/s2. If it starts at rest, what will its velocity be after 5 s, and how far will it have traveled from its starting point?
