Common Core Shifts for Mathematics
Focus: The standards focus deeply on the major work of each grade level Coherence: Thinking across grades and linking to major topics Rigor: Pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal emphasis

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Shifts to prepare for PARCC
Students can persevere on multiple step word problems. Students can explain their reasoning in writing by stating evidence. Students can use math tools on the computer to help solve. Students can identify multiple ways to approach or solve a problem.

What can I do to support my child?
Ask your child questions and require them to explain their thinking. Let your child persevere when faced with a challenge. Have your child figure out real world math problems at home, the grocery, a restaurant, etc.
