Grant administration is corrupt
Depression in North
Congress tires of fixing the South
White Southerners were mostly Democrat
Refused to vote
Used violence instead
In Election of 1876, they attempt to take back the South by voting

Election of 1876 is disputed between Hayes (R) and Tilden (D)
Compromise says Hayes will be president IF he removes the federal troops
He agrees
No protection for AAs
Reconstruction is over

Southern states slowly take away the 14th and 15th Amendments

Supreme Court upheld “separate but equal” from Plessy v Ferguson
Separate facilities are acceptable as long as they are equal
Eliminates the 14th
Allows for Jim Crow laws
Laws that restrict the freedoms of black people

7. IV. Economics Cotton wore out soil and prices fell
Hardest on sharecroppers
Many textile mills open in the South in the 1880s and AAs are not hired
Most stay poor
Some move North
