What was the East West Schism? What made mosaics so unique? Who came to occupy Constantinople in the 1200s? What people conquered the Byzantine Empire in 1453? What factors led to the fall of the Byzantine Empire?

Answers The separation of the church. Now it was divided into East-West. Many examples: they tell stories, they are of exceptional quality and craftsmanship, they left viewers in awe, etc. Mosaics covered church walls and ceilings in the Byzantine empire. They were one of the most popular art forms in the Empire. European Christians/Crusaders The Ottoman Turks, their leader was Mehmed II Multiple factors led to the fall of the Empire: plague, debt that Justinian left the empire with from military spending, Persians began to attack borders, Arab tribes conquering lands, Crusaders, Turks taking over the Empire

East-West Schism Roman Catholic Church (West) Eastern Orthodox Church
-Emperor seen as God’s representative on Earth (Emperor has influence of church and Patriarch) -Pope claimed absolute authority over all western Christians Based beliefs on Jesus & Bible -Creed: claimed Holy Spirit comes from Father and the Son (God and Jesus) Worship in Church, services led by priests and bishops -Holy Spirit comes only from the Father -Icons should not be destroyed -Icons were banned and destroyed
