1 Amendment Scenarios Review Game

2 Rules You will be shown a scenario of a situation where at least one amendment is present. You will determine which amendment is present. Bonus point if you indicate if there is a violation or not, and why.

3 Scenario 1 Fiona was stepping up to her polling place to cast her vote for president. She was shocked when the clerk told her it would be $15 to receive her ballot.

4 24th Amendment! Violation? Yes, she does not have to pay a poll tax.

5 Scenario 2 Julia was told she needed to stop wearing her religious necklace at work, or she would be fired

6 1st Amendment! Violation? Yes, she has the freedom to wear religious articles.

7 Scenario 3 Michael wants to own a firearm, and went to the appropriate place to get a license and the firearm itself.

8 2nd Amendment Violation? No

9 Scenario 4 George was being forced to work on someone’s farm, and was not paid. The owner of the farm threatened him with violence if he didn’t work.

10 13th Amendment Violation? Yes, he is being forced to be a slave

11 Scenario 5 A group of angry people who want a law to change decide to go to their state government buildings and sit outside while holding signs. They did not get in the way or cause violence.

12 1st amendment Violation? No

13 Scenario 6 Kyle was arrested, and the police station was forcing him to talk.

14 5th Amendment Violation? Yes, he has the right to remain silent and does not have to testify against himself

15 Scenario 7 Terry was hiding illegal weapons in his house. The police came to his house to search. When Terry asked if they had a warrant, they said no, but still came in

16 4th Amendment Violation? Yes, the police were illegally searching because they did not have a permit.

17 Scenario 8 Pauline was at home when she heard a knock on her door. It was really late, but she went anyway. Three soldiers were at her door demanding to let them stay the night

18 3rd Amendment Violation? Yes, she does not have to harbor soldiers in her home.

19 Scenario 9 Lauren was found not guilty of a murder charge. The other lawyers were angry, and promised to try and charge her again

20 5th Amendment Violation? Yes, she cannot be charged twice for the same crime

21 Scenario 10 President Lessings died in a tragic plane crash. Vice president Kinsen takes over as president.

22 25th Amendment Violation? No

23 Scenario 11 Stanley wore a shirt that said “I hate America” at a town hall meeting. The leader of the meeting told him to leave.

24 1st Amendment Violation? Yes, he has the freedom of speech to wear that shirt.

25 Scenario 12 Sheila proudly walked to the poll to vote for president.

26 19th Amendment Violation? No

27 Scenario 13 The state of Florida makes a law about its schools because the national government doesn’t have the power according to the constitution.

28 10th Amendment Violation? No

29 Scenario 14 Kelly’s government told her she needs to sell her home to make room for a public government building. The government said it would pay her more than double the value of her home and property.

30 5th Amendment Violation? No, they are PAYING her for her land

31 Scenario 15 Nicholas was charged for a large crime and cannot afford a lawyer. They told him they don’t care, and are still going to start the trial

32 Amendment 6 Violation? Yes, he has the right to a lawyer even if he can’t afford one.

33 Scenario 16 The news stations in the United States are shut down because the president doesn’t like what they are saying about him/her

34 1st amendment Violation? Yes, the freedom of the press (news) is being supressed.

35 Scenario 17 Lance was accused of killing 17 people and found guilty. His sentence was to be killed by being buried alive

36 8th Amendment Violation? Yes, he is protected from cruel and unusual punishment.
