7. 5W’s Case studies - Holderness coastline
Who?
-At Easington, people there are desperate for defences as there is a gas terminal which is responsible for producing 25% of the UK’s electricity.
-Residents south of Mapleton are annoyed that the defences there have led to an increase in erosion where they live
-Farmers have had to relocate as lifestock/land has been lost
What?
It has high rates of erosion that are now starting to impact on local people, the economy and environment. In some locations, such as Mapleton, defences in the form of groynes have been added to protect key roads such as the B121 which will allow people and trade to continue to flow through the area
Where?
Located along the east coast of the UK, stretching from Flamborough to Spurn Point. It falls within the East Riding of Yorkshire and boarders the North Sea
When?
It has long been identified as a vulnerable coastline at risk from erosion, with rates between 5-10 metres a year. This area has incredibly soft but fertile boulder clay that was deposited during the last ice age
Why?
Although the soft boulder clay is one of the main reasons for the high rate of erosion, long shore drift picks up and transports sediment along this coastline, meaning very little sediment can be used to build beaches up.

It is hoped to encourage further investment and businesses around northern cities that will be easier to access due to the train line
A new high speed train line (HS2) to connect cities in the north more with each other
The North is considered not as developed as the South with average salaries, house prices and life expectancy being lower in many Northern regions
One way in which the government are trying to address the North South divide in the UK
For it to be constructed, lots of countryside will be lost, as well as housing – people will have to find a home elsewhere

-Farmers are being educated on best practice and how to get the most out of land
-Women are given an equal role (gender equality)
-Money made through Kuapa Kokoo has improved quality of life, life expectancy
-Fair Trade provides farmers with a fairer share
-Extra money can be invested in to machinery meaning farmers can earn more
-The more money earned allows farmers to diversify more
-Farmers are using less fertilisers, reducing the impact on the soil
-Less water pollution due to reduced fertilisers
-farmers are being encouraged to recycle waste products making them more environmentally friendly
