2 GRAMMAR WARM-UP #9: Independent Clauses
An independent clause is a group of words that can make a complete statement and has a subject and a verb. Copy the sentence below. Enclose each prepositional phrase in [ ]. Find the verb phrase and underline it twice. Underline the subject once. The student finished class. They went to lunch. Kevin did not want to hurt Kathy’s feelings. Write your own independent clause on your paper. Make sure to include a subject and verb.

A dependent clause is a group of words with a subject and verb that cannot stand alone. Copy the examples on your paper, skipping lines between numbers: 1. Since the meeting is still in progress 2. After the players practiced 3. Until the storm is over Add to each dependent clause so it is a proper sentence. Example: Kathy will be late for dinner since the meeting is still in progress.

Instructions: Rewrite each clause and label each as independent or dependent. If it is dependent, underline the clause then make it into a full sentence. 1. You will be sleeping 2. Instructions: Copy the sentences below. Each sentence has TWO independent clauses in it. Correct the sentences by adding either a comma and a conjunction (FANBOY) or a semicolon. Enclose each prepositional phrase in [ ]. Find the TWO verb phrases and underline them twice. Underline the TWO subjects once. 1.  Our solar system has nine major planets only one has intelligent life. 2.  Look through Angelo's telescope you can see Saturn's rings. 3.  Please check the position of that star cluster I cannot find it. 4.  The Milky Way looks like a dim cloud in the night sky it is actually a huge galaxy containing millions of stars. 5.  Watch the sky closely for several minutes you can see an artificial satellite pass over.

Any semicolon/comma and conjunction could be replaces with the other. Check to see you have yours in the right place.
