An independent clause is a group of words that can make a complete statement and has a subject and a verb.
Copy the sentence below. Enclose each prepositional phrase in [ ]. Find the verb phrase and underline it twice. Underline the subject once.
The student finished class.
They went to lunch.
Kevin did not want to hurt Kathy’s feelings.
Write your own independent clause on your paper. Make sure to include a subject and verb.

A dependent clause is a group of words with a subject and verb that cannot stand alone. Copy the examples on your paper, skipping lines between numbers: 1. Since the meeting is still in progress 2. After the players practiced 3. Until the storm is over Add to each dependent clause so it is a proper sentence. Example: Kathy will be late for dinner since the meeting is still in progress.

Instructions: Rewrite each clause and label each as independent or dependent. If it is dependent, underline the clause then make it into a full sentence.

Instructions: Copy the sentences below. Each sentence has TWO independent clauses in it. Correct the sentences by adding either a comma and a conjunction (FANBOY) or a semicolon.
