Rock Cycle Lab Changing our models
2
Class Agenda TODAY’s PLAN: Today’s TaSK:
EQ: What causes Earth’s materials to change? LT: Develop and use models to obtain information about the rock cycle SC: To identify the 2 factors (Variables) that cause rock changes Initial Thoughts Review overview of lab Write hypothesis Complete Part 1 and 2 of the lab. IF TIME, start Initial Thoughts #2
3
Initial thoughts 1. What is sediment? 2. What energy source causes weathering and erosion to change soil into sediment? 3. How do you think sediment turns into sedimentary rock?
4
CLASS Discussion - How does weathering and erosion turn soil into sediment?
1. Where is the soil in this picture? 2. Where will the soil end up as weathering and erosion happen? 3. What energy is causing weathering and erosion to happen?
5
How does weathering and erosion turn soil into sediment?
Igneous Rock River with sediments Remember to emphasize how the sun’s energy is causing the weathering, which can cause more erosion possibilities that carries the sediment into the water. Deposit of Sediments in the water
6
Review process to sedimentary rock
Ask questions like: What happens to the soil and rock as it is broken down by weathering and erosion? What happens to plants and animals as they die? Where does the pressure come from in order to make the sedimentary rock at the bottom?
7
Write your hypothesis for rocks…
Discuss as a team and write your answer on the worksheet. The two factors that are required to cause changes to rocks are _______________________________________ and _____________________________________________.
8
Procedures Follow the directions exactly on the worksheet
SAFETY IS CRITICAL!!!!!!! REMEMBER: This is a test & counts as 50% of your grade
9
Materials (DAY 1) 1. Look over the materials on your table.
2. Is there any materials missing from the list below? 3. Who is the team leader today? 3 different color crayons 4 different Starbursts 1 mint in package paper plate knife plastic bag plastic cup hammer heavy books
10
Procedure (Day 1) Finish part 1, then raise hand to check with teacher before moving onto part 2. Finish part 2, make sure all students record and clean up. Stay at your table when done and work on zooniverse if part 1 and part 2 of worksheet is complete. Teacher – stop here unless you have enough time to intro for tomorrow.
11
Your experiment is showing how rocks can change over time, like…
This is an overview of the lab. Today, we will only get to how igneous rock can change into sediment, which can form into sedimentary rock.
