Case Study #1 So here we are, a small business, attempting to grow by embracing newer technologies and streamlining our processes, and we are being held back. This has affected everything from our bottom line to employee morale. We see other companies located closer to the city centre gaining a competitive advantage by having exponentially better internet service available to them. We have been trying to avoid the down time and extra expense this will create, but it is seemingly inevitable at this point. We are falling behind. Construction Industry Business

Case Study #2 Everything from agriculture courses and reporting are now online. If you rely on this and it’s not working, it’s very stressful. The current service is also unreliable and intermittent. It’s frustrating. When service is slow, s can be read, but it’s difficult to access our bank account, which means online banking is unavailable. That’s a problem when paying vendors and I have to act quickly. In the past, I disabled automatic updates of software, including anti-virus programs, which is always a risk. However, I had to enable them again because online banking is a part of my job. Farmer in Sarnia-Lambton Area

Stress & frustration for the business owner & employees Finding technology work arounds Demand/expectation to be online by industry/customers

Case Study #3 We recently have been forced to give up our licensing system (MNFR) because our current voice over IP system is not fast enough. Now our clients have to get their own before they get here or drive 90 minutes away. We are also looking at upgrading our cash system and booking system that are all cloud based and because of the lower speed internet, no one is sure it will work. Fishing, Hunting, Camping Business

Who’s in the broadband infrastructure space?
Private telecom companies of all sizes Regional organizations that engage the private sector & government Municipally-driven telecom networks Government (policy framework)
14
Case Study #4 Approximately 2 years ago we spoke with our telecom company about how we can get the Fiber to our location and have it to run to the closest box, the cost to have that done was $30,000 to $40,000 and then approximately another $10,000 to get it in the building. They were willing to share some of that cost, but we thought it was a service that should be available already seeing that we are located in a populous area. We noticed other companies and residential areas with in 10km of us receive Fiber and it has been very frustrating to operate on what feels like dial up, very limited or no WIFI and sometimes the internet just shuts down. 2019 Pre-Budget Submission
Leverage the private sector to expand broadband access Reclassify broadband as an investment category in order to broaden potential funding sources. Commit to an intergovernmental ‘funds matching’ formula in partnership with other levels of government. Identify and remove barriers to investment around building, wholesaling, leasing, and ownership of digital infrastructure. Establish targets for broadband penetration and speeds and benchmark against competitor jurisdictions.

Limited internet access impacts community
