1 Order of Operations with Exponents
Presented by Mr. Laws 6th Grade Math JCMS

2 Common Core State Standard (CCSS)
6.EE.1 – Write and evaluate expression involving whole number exponents. Tip: Do not need to copy on notes.

3 Essential Question: How do you use the order of operations to simplify expressions with exponents? Tip: Give student time to write done C-notes and complete fill ins.

4 Numerical Expressions
Key Vocabulary Base Exponents Numerical Expressions Order of Operations Power

5 What is a Numerical Expression?
A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase that includes only numbers and operations. Example: x 6 is a numerical expression. 2. Numerical expressions can also contain exponents as part of the expression. Example: 22 + (8 – 3)

6 What is the Order of Operation?
3. The order of operations is a rule for evaluating expressions. 4. The order of operations helps simplify the expression in order to find its value.

7 What is PEMDAS? 5. PEMDAS is an abbreviation of the order of the order of operations. 6. The letters stand for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiply, Divide, Add, Subtract. 7. You use PEMDAS to help you evaluate and find the value of the numerical expression. Good way to remember is to say “Please Excuse, My Dear Aunt Sally “ but that is not PEMDAS just a way to remember what the letters mean.

8 What are the Rules of PEMDAS?
a. Do all operations within parentheses. (), {}, [] b. Find the value of numbers with exponents. 52 = 25 c. Multiply and Divide in order from left to right. d. Add and Subtract in order from left to right. Make sure student understand that both multiply and divide or add and subtract is from left to right in order - they sometimes don’t follow the general rule. Examples: a. 12 divide by 6 x 4 = 2 x 4 = 8; b. 12 – – you would do 12 – 4 = = 14

9 What are the Rules of PEMDAS?
Sample Problem # 1 Simplify : Step 1: Do all operations within the parentheses. (7 + 3) = 10 Step 2: Find the value of the numbers with exponents. 32 = 9 Step 3: Multiply and divide in order from left to right. 60 divide by 10 = 6 Step 4 Add and Subtract in order from left to right = 15 6 + 9 = 15

10 What are the Rules of PEMDAS?
Sample Problem # 2 Simplify : 52 – (2 x 8) + 9 Step 1: Do all operations within the parentheses. (2 x 8) = 16 Step 2: Find the value of the numbers with exponents. 52 = 25 52 – Step 3 Add and subtract in order from left to right. 25 – 16 = Why not add? 25 – 9 + 9 = 18

11 Summary What have you learned about this lesson?
What are some important steps to remember when using order of operations or order of operation with exponents? Do you have any more questions about this lesson? Make sure you review your notes, add additional questions or notes, and write a summary or reflection.
