Do you know which type of learning style you use to learn?
What is learning? Do you know which type of learning style you use to learn?
2
What does learning mean?
The Oxford Dictionary defines learning as “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience or being taught.” Missiontolearn.com define learning as “the lifelong process of transforming information and experience into knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes.”
3
Reflection Questions Did you assume learning was only associated with the classroom environment? Do you know which learning style you use when studying? Or do you read a book and hope the information sticks in your head?
4
Are there different styles of learning?
The answer is yes! The Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire was published in 1986 and it summarised four different learning styles. The questionnaire assisted students to identify which learning style they used and how they could be more efficient when learning. If you recognise how you learn best, you can make the best use of your time.
5
What are the Different Learning Styles?
There were four different learning styles defined in the questionnaire and these are as follows: Activist Reflector Theorist Pragmatist
6
Activist Style Reflection Style
Activists learn best by participating in structured activities such as role-play, games and group tasks. Do you relish the opportunity to attempt new challenges and do you like taking the lead in group activities? If the answer is yes then you adopt the activist style of learning. Reflection Style Reflectors learn best by taking time to think over situations and lectures. Reflectors enjoy finding out more information on a subject, rather than only wanting to know the essential facts. If you can link one subject to another and enjoy coming up with creative solutions to problems then you are a reflective learner.
7
Theorist Style Pragmatist Style
Theorists learn best from following action plans and taking part in structured learning activities. If you are an organised individual who enjoys asking analytical questions and looking at different explanations for an outcome then you are a theorist learner. Pragmatist Style Pragmatists learn best by relating theories to practical situations. They work concisely and enjoy working to the specifications of an action plan. If you like to participate in activites which reinforce what has been taught in a lecture then you adopt the pragmatist style of learning.
8
How will this help me? If you are aware of which learning style helps you to retain information, it will assist you in making the most efficient use of your study time. It will also assist you in becoming aware of how you can develop as an individual. By taking into account alternative methods of learning, it will strengthen your versatility.
9
Remember: What works for you may not work for another, it is important to reflect on your own experiences to find out what is best for you. “When viewed broadly, learning can be seen as the creative development of a personal identity.” (Schmeck, 1988).
